THAT'S right - not once but twice, the man dubbed the 'father of Rock 'n' Roll' visited the city of dreaming spires.

The first occasion was in 1984: Oxford Poly (before it became Brookes) made what the Oxford Mail called the 'scoop of the year' when it booked the Roll Over Beethoven singer to perform on October 13.

The great man returned a quarter of a century later when he played the New Theatre in November 2009 aged 83.

Sadly the Oxford Mail archive does not hold reviews of either of the shows.

Mr Berry's family announced today that he passed away at home in the past 24 hours.

In a short post on his official website they wrote: "We are deeply saddened to announce that Chuck Berry – beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather – passed away at his home today at the age of 90.

"Though his health had deteriorated recently, he spent his last days at home surrounded by the love of his family and friends.

"The Berry family asks that you respect their privacy during this difficult time."
