A CAFE is raising its teacups this week in memory of 16-month-old boy who tragically died in his sleep.

Freddie Zivkovic’s parents Mark and Carrie are determined to raise awareness of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) after he died in August last year.

The couple who have been married for almost three years want to do everything they can to help other parents through the ‘heartbreaking time’.

With Mr Zivkovic as head chef and Carrie as a waitress at Cafe Aloha in Botley, their colleagues have decided to help raise funds for The Lullaby Trust, which supports bereaved parents whose child has died from SIDS.

Mrs Zivkovic, 20, said: “He was a very cheeky, very happy little boy.

“I remember the last word he learnt before he died was ‘cheese’, like when you say ‘cheese’ before taking a picture.

“We just put him to bed that night and then in the morning he was just still asleep, we could not wake him.

“We think about him all the time and there will be things we will see and wish we were able to share it with him.”

The cafe in West Way Shopping Centre will be serving cream teas from today until Saturday, March 18 where £2 will be donated to The Lullaby Trust.

The cream teas will cost £4.50 and will include two freshly baked scones, clotted cream, strawberry jam and tea or coffee and on Friday and Saturday there will be a free refill of tea or coffee if a donation is made.

Mr Zivkovic, 26, added: “All the money that will be raised through the cream teas will be in Freddie’s name so that he is not forgotten.

“I do not want people to stop talking about him, I do not want him to be forgotten.

“Everyone goes through the grieving process differently and we want to do all we can to raise money to help find out why babies die from SIDS.”

The couple are expecting their second child Alesha April in July.

Mrs Zivkovic added: “Her middle name is April because that is the month Freddie was born in.

“It will be their room when she comes along in July.

“We are planning to get a monitor that fits on the cot, so if the baby stops breathing for more than 20 seconds an alarm goes off.”

Director of services at the trust Jenny Ward said it was ‘heartwarming’ to see the Zivkovics channelling their energy into fundraising.

She said: “We would like to extend our thanks to the couple and their customers for their generosity.

“The Lullaby Trust relies on the efforts of dedicated fundraisers like Mark and Carrie to continue our vital work educating families on safer sleep for babies, researching the potential causes of SIDS and supporting bereaved families.”
