A recent rise in prank calls has led to Thames Valley Police issuing advice to those being targeted.

The force said there had been a recent rise in the calls, which vary in format.

One of the main scenarios features an angry Scottish man claiming the person he calls is stealing his wifi.

The calls are pre-recorded and have automatic responses, giving the impression that recipients are actually speaking to someone who is answering back.

Sometimes a mobile phone number shows up when the call comes through but on other occasions the number is withheld.

Officers said the calls have predominantly targeted elderly and young people and have in some cases caused alarm and distress.

They advised anyone with concerns to call the force on 101 or contact their phone provider.

The force also said calls at night can be avoided by turning off your phone.
