JOINT work is under way between councils to tackle ‘out of town’ taxis in Oxford.

Oxford City Council said it was working with other authorities to tackle the ‘loophole’, which allows hackney carriages to take on pre-booked work outside the area they are licensed in. This means those licensed outside the city can still work there.

A report said: “This poses a safeguarding risk to passengers and the public as it hampers our public protection role on taxis.

“There is also a financial risk due to a reduction in licences. Work is underway with neighbouring authorities.

“We need to work with them to encourage drivers and vehicles back to Oxford.”

The discussion is next Wednesday.
