POLICE are tackling the arduous task of sifting through 164 seized bikes to see whether any have been reported stolen.

The bikes were discovered in the back garden of a home in the Littlemore area of Oxford, where police arrested a man, 48, on suspicion of handling stolen goods.

Officers are now working their way through the haul, running details of the bikes through police computer systems and an online bike register.

PCSO Ryan Tappin, one of the team tasked with checking the bikes, said: “I’ve never seen something like this before.

“I’ve recovered two or three bikes from a property on the off chance, but never 164.”

Police will reunite any stolen bikes they find with their rightful owners.

The arrested man has been bailed until May 8 while the investigation continues.
