A HEADTEACHER has expressed concerns over mistakes in maths revision guides written to help GCSE students.

There were three errors out of 174 questions in an AQA GCSE Mathematics Higher Exam Practice Book, published by Oxford University Press.

The textbook is just one of many found to contain mistakes in an investigation conduced by BBC's The One Show.

Headteacher at Oxford Spires Academy Sue Croft said: “It is concerning, most definitely, and symptomatic of the pressure the system is under due to all the changes.

“It certainly won’t help teachers' anxiety levels as they deal with the new curriculum and types of exam."

The investigation also reported eight mistakes in 1,200 questions in a Mathematics GCSE for OCR Homework Book, published by Cambridge University Press.

Eight errors were found in 563 questions in the Revise Edexcel GCSE maths revision workbook, published by Pearson.

A spokesman for Oxford University Press said: “We are aware of this study, which picked up three minor errors in one of our individual titles.

“Oxford University Press is committed to the highest levels of quality, and we have rigorous processes in place to ensure our textbooks are accurate. All our titles are checked at various stages of the development process by external experts, who are vetted and tested before working with us.

“As and when errors are reported, we always look into them as soon as possible and update the title at next reprint, or earlier. We have already scheduled changes to the title in question, and the corrections will appear in the near future. Updated answers can now be found on our website.”
