A primary school has been forced to shut its doors because of a heating failure this morning.

St Gregory the Great School at Cricket Road in Cowley, Oxford, will be shut for the rest of the day because of the problem.

The school said that engineers had been on site this morning assessing the situation.

The secondary school remains open to pupils and reception staff confirmed this afternoon that the primary school will re-open tomorrow.

One parent, Iris, said that she first heard the news of the closure via text message at 8.16am.

She said: "I think they should have made other parents aware earlier because school starts at 8.30am.

"Most people would already be on their way to school when that message was sent.

"Personally it is not a problem for me because I work part time but it is not convenient for others.

"It is a hassle for people to re-arrange their plans because of this."

The school, which includes both the primary and secondary school, has 1,370 pupils on register.

The news comes two weeks after a Headington school was forced to shut because of heating problems.
