HOUR-long delays are easing after drivers across the city spent their evenings in traffic chaos following congestion on a number of main routes.

The A34 had seen tail backs northbound as far back as Radley, as well as at the Pear Tree interchange.

There were also delays on the Southern Bypass and Eastern Bypass roads, the Abingdon Road, Iffley Road, London Road in Headington, Woodstock Road, Banbury Road and Botley Road.

Some of the problems began after a car transporter broke down this afternoon just before the Peartree Interchange on the northbound carriageway.

By 6.20pm all lanes reopened on the A34 Northbound, however drivers were still faced with delays of up to 50 minutes.

During the height of the gridlock, it took workers on Osney Mead Industrial Estate half an hour to get onto the Botley Road.

Our news editor Pete Grant was among the many unhappy drivers on the road.

Oxford Bus Company used social media to inform bus users users to expect delays on a number of its services.

Hannah Jones, a spokeswoman for Thames Valley Police, said: "TVP was called shortly before 4pm with a report of a collision involving a lorry and a car on the A34 southbound near Botley.

"This was a damage only collision and the road was cleared shortly afterwards."

Commuters also experienced delays on the A415 between Abingdon and Culham after a crash just after the train station.

Ms Jones added: "TVP was called shortly after 3.30pm today to a report of a collision in Abingdon Road, A415, Culham.

"This was a three vehilce collision.

"Officers and the ambulance service are currently on the scene."
