STARS of the screen from Oxfordshire are celebrating a dazzling hat-trick of wins at the Golden Globes.

Actress Claire Foy got top billing at the glittering Los Angeles awards ceremony when she was named best actress in a TV drama for her starring role in The Crown, the big-budget series on Netflix.

And former pupils of The Dragon School in North Oxford Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie also won awards.

Hiddleston won Best Actor in a Mini-Series or TV Motion Picture for his performance as hotel night porter Jonathan Pine in BBC One's The Night Manager.

And co-star Hugh Laurie, picked up Best Supporting Actor for playing Richard Roper in the same John Le Carré adaptation.

Staff and students at the Oxford School of Drama in Woodstock celebrated Miss Foy's win as they remembered her time at the school on a one-year acting course from 2006 to 2007.

The 32-year-old also starred earlier as Anne Boleyn in the acclaimed BBC history drama Wolf Hall.

Miss Foy described her award win as an out of body experience as she paid tribute to the Queen.

She said: "I really wouldn't be here if it wasn't for some extraordinary women, one is Queen Elizabeth II.

"She has been at the centre of the world the past 63 years and I think the world could do with a few more women at the centre of it if you ask me."

Kate Ashcroft, executive director at The Oxford School of Drama, said: "This is the biggest award won by any of our former students – the Golden Globes are second only to the Oscars.

"Claire’s performance in The Crown is so assured and we are all celebrating here.

"She was such a talented, dedicated and hard-working student and is such a great role model for our students.

"It’s wonderful for our students to think they could be the next Claire Foy and go onto achieve what she has achieved.

"Claire is not a diva – she is extremely bubbly, full of life and energy and when she was here she was one of the gang."

Student Molly Chesworth, 22, added: "Claire Foy is a true inspiration to us all - she inspires us to achieve, no matter how hard it gets."

Ms Ashcroft added the actress kept in touch with the school and was planning to attend a fundraising event at Broughton Castle near Banbury in March.

The Crown, which stars John Lithgow as Sir Winston Churchill and Matt Smith as the Duke of Edinburgh, was also named best television drama series.

The Golden Globe Awards honour the best in TV and film from the past year and are seen as a pointer for the Oscars.
