POLICE and staff at The Cherwell School are working together to make sure pupils cycling to school past a travellers’ site remain safe.
Travellers set up camp in Marston Ferry Road last week, and have since been told to move on.
But as of yesterday they remained on the cycle path near the major secondary school.
Headteacher Chris Price said: “It is obviously a complex issue as the travellers do remain on the cycle path, which has caused some concern over safety matters especially for our many students who cycle to school.
“We are liaising with the police neighbourhood team as necessary to make sure the track remains safe to all users.”
Mr Price confirmed there had been a ‘minor issue’ earlier this week when youngsters from the travellers’ site attempted to come into the school site but that staff dealt with it quickly.
There had been reports that a GCSE controlled assessment had been disrupted by trespassers but Mr Price clarified that had not happened.
Oxfordshire County Council confirmed earlier in the week it would begin legal action if the travellers did not move on.
