An Oxford University student who wanted to travel the world in the final months of his life has lost his battle with cancer.

Matt Greenwood passed away on Sunday at the age of 21 after fighting terminal bone cancer since October.

But yesterday his college St Edmund Hall said he had passed away.

St Edmund Hall principal Professor Keith Gull said: "He was a brilliant student and an extremely brave man, constantly thinking of others and giving thanks for what others had done for him.

"He was an extraordinary person who we’ll miss terribly.

"Matt’s determination and sense of humour – before and after his diagnosis, through long stays in hospital, his different treatments, and a major operation – have been inspirational and humbling."

Matt's parents, Peter and Michaela, said: "One of the most favourite topics of conversation Matt had was that of his forthcoming visits to the Hall.

"It was lovely to see him back to his old self after being discharged from hospital, even though it only lasted for such a short time.

"But most important of all was the hope that it gave to him of being able to continue his life surrounded by his friends, in a place that he truly loved.”

Mr Greenwood was vice-captain of the St Edmund Hall Boat Club and also played rugby.

He was treated at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Birmingham and endured two cycles of chemotherapy to fight the cancer, which started in his hip before spreading to his lungs.

He also had his right leg amputated in his fight against the disease.
