THEY are one of the most enigmatic bands of all time – pioneers of electronic music who style themselves on robots.

Today the German band Kraftwerk have announced a new date in Oxford – promising a night of 3D experimental art.

The band, best known for hits The Model, Autobahn and Trans-Europe Express, will play the city's New Theatre on June 6.

The new date comes after their 12-date UK tour, which includes three nights at the Royal Albert Hall, sold out. Tickets go on sale on Friday.

The show will feature 3D visuals, and projections, with the band – Ralf Hütter, Henning Schmitz, Fritz Hilpert and Falk Grieffenhagen – sporting their now-trademark neon suits.

Kraftwerk were founded in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. The pair produced and recorded their music at Düsseldorf's Kling Klang Studio. Always ahead of their time, they laid the template for modern electronic music. Artists to have been influenced by the band are as diverse as David Bowie, Jay-Z, Coldplay, OMD, Depeche Mode, Kanye West and New Order.

Their music pioneered such techniques as looping, sampling, and the use of synthetic voices – forging a genre now known as synth-pop.

A spokesman for the band said: "Bringing together music and performance art, Kraftwerk 3-D concerts are a true 'gesamtkunstwerk' – a total work of art.”
