A STUDENT accused of raping a woman after they met in an Oxford nightclub said he would not have had sex with anyone without their consent.

Changqing Shao denies raping the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, in student halls after meeting her at The Bridge nightclub.

Giving evidence through a Mandarin interpreter at Oxford Crown Court on Friday, the 21-year-old said his accuser initiated the intimate contact which led to them having what he claims was consensual sex on October 18 last year.

The court heard how Shao was out with a friend in the Hythe Bridge Street club when he met the woman, danced with her and kissed her.

Shao said the pair shared a taxi home, and added she followed him out of the vehicle at his address.

Shao said: “At that time she was very down, not in a good mood. Low spirit.”

Defending him Adrian Redgrave QC asked Shao to describe what happened when they entered his room.

Shao replied the woman was sat on the bed and that he went to the toilet, and then came back out and sat down next to her.

He added: “She pulled me in to her arms to kiss and then we were very close to each other and in a very intimate way."

He said he woke up later on to find the woman was not there.

Mr Redgrave said: “The accusation that is made against you is that you had sexual intercourse with her without her consent, is that what happened?

Shao said: “I believe she wanted it and she initiated it.”

Mr Redgrave added: “Would you ever have intercourse with someone unless they had consented?”

Shao said: “Of course not.”

Shao was later acquitted of rape.
