OXFORD University has been ranked the top institution of its kind in Europe and sixth in the world by an American media company. 

US News & World Report's rankings are the largest and most comprehensive assessment of research universities globally, looking at 1,000 universities across 65 countries.

Its list of best universities for 2017 was 'dominated' by US universities, but both Oxford and Cambridge made it into the top 10. 

It comes after Oxford was rated the best university in the world by Times Higher Education last month, knocking five-time champion California Institute of Technology into second place.

Oxford University was the top university in the UK and Europe, according to the US News & World Report rankings. The top five in the UK were:

1.     University of Oxford

2.     University of Cambridge

3.     Imperial College London

4.     University of College London

5.     University of Edinburgh

The best universities globally were: 

1.     Harvard University (US)

2.     Massachusetts Institute of Technology (US)

3.     Stanford University (US)

4.     University of California--Berkeley (US)

5.     California Institute of Technology (US)

6.     University of Oxford (UK)

7.     University of Cambridge (US)

8.     Princeton University (US)
