HEADINGTON has experienced traffic chaos in the week since a £12.5m infrastructure overhaul began, a councillor has said.

At the start of the 23-month Access to Headington scheme last Monday four-way temporary traffic lights were put up at the junction of Old Road, Roosevelt Drive, Gipsy Lane and Warneford Lane.

These works, expected to be completed in March 2017, comprise the first phase of the sweeping improvement project.

Oxfordshire county councillor Liz Brighouse said: “It has gone just as we thought it would go. It is chaos.

“Residents using the number 4 bus are having problems, it is not running on time. It is taking a long time to get anywhere.

“It will probably ease off a bit next week as the schools go on holiday.

“I don’t know how much they can do to mitigate it. They have got lots of people there trying hard to keep the traffic flowing.

“There is so much traffic in the area that it’s becoming ridiculous. It’s just impossible for people trying to live here with the level of traffic.

“I am hoping Roosevelt Drive is going to be finished very quickly, they are obviously working very hard to get it done quickly.”

The county council previously warned motorists that there would be disruption and to plan their journeys ahead.

Oxfordshire County Council spokesperson Martin Crabtree said: “At the moment things are going as we expected.

“Traffic levels, and therefore any disruption, will be at their peak during the morning and evening as people go to and from work and so we advise people to plan their journeys to either avoid or take into account any delays.”
