A MAN suspected of attempted murder after a woman was found on fire has been released on police bail.

The 31-year-old was arrested after emergency services were called to the house in Balfour Road, Blackbird Leys, shortly after 10am on Wednesday.

James Williams, spokesman for Thames Valley Police, confirmed that he was kept in custody overnight and added the force was treating it as a 'domestic incident'.

Today, Mr Williams said the suspect had been released on police bail until December 13.

He added: "The woman is still in a serious condition in hospital."

Paramedics said 80 per cent of the woman's skin suffered 'serious, stage one' burns but said they did not think the injuries were life-threatening.

The road between Wingate Close and Sandy Lane was cordoned off and guarded by police officers for almost six hours on Wednesday while detectives and firefighters investigated the incident.

Forensic officers also swept inside and outside the property and it is understood a tent was set up to gather evidence in the garden of the property.

The force could not confirm any of the circumstances with detectives telling the Oxford Mail they were in the 'early days' in their investigation to establish what happened.

It is understood a neighbour called the emergency services after hearing shouting.

South Central Ambulance Service spokesman David Gallagher said an ambulance and senior paramedic was sent to the house at about 10am.

He added: "We attended and it appeared a female, somehow, has come alight.

"The woman sustained approximately 80 per cent, stage one burns, but they are not thought to be life threatening."

A resident of Balfour Road, who did not want to be named, said they had heard a woman had been set on fire.

They added: "The ambulance came and took the woman. I've never seen anything like it before.

"They also took a car away and bags out of the house."

Another speculated that there were about 12 people living in the house and said the woman was of Asian ethnicity.

Bus services were suspended throughout the day on the road, while officers door knocked homes and spoke to neighbours and witnesses.

Thames Valley Police spokesman James Williams said he could not confirm how the woman was injured or if there was anyone else in the house at the time, adding: "We are investigating the incident to establish what has happened."

Balfour Road resident John Dillion, who has lived in the street for 50 years, said he hoped the woman would make a full recovery.

The Blackbird Leys parish councillor added: "It's so sad that these things can happen in this day and age.

"Nobody really knows what has happened, but I hope the woman is going to ok.

"It's very rare anything like this happens in the estate, this estate is much, much better than it's ever been before."

Police want to hear from anyone saw or heard anything unusual in Balfour Road yesterday morning to contact them on 101.

A passer-by informed the Oxford Mail that she had seen 'several police vans and cars and a fire engine' in the road at about 11am and a 'bus up on the kerb'.
