FILM crews have infiltrated one of Oxford's most iconic spots to shoot scenes for Transformers: The Last Knight.

Crowds have gathered in Radcliffe Square to catch a glimpse of big-screen royalty as the blockbuster's stars Mark Whalberg and Sir Anthony Hopkins roam around the city.

Towering blue structures have been set up in High Street for crews to get a better vantage point, complete with high-tech cameras and lighting.

Preparations launched this morning, when workers were seen removing bikes locked on railings outside the Bodleian Library and manoeuvring a classic car.

Fans have already taken to social media with their best snaps of the action.

Residents can expect to see the excitement continue for the next three days, with filming locations expected to include colleges and the University Church of St Mary the Virgin.

Cowley resident Syeda Butterworth managed to meet Sir Anthony and even snapped a friendly photo with him.

She said: "I was quite surprised to see Sir Anthony Hopkins. I knew he was starring in the movie but really only expected to see scenes with extras being filmed."

Oxford Brookes student Charlotte Smith also stopped by the Radcliffe Camera to watch what was going on.

The 18-year-old, who was out exploring after moving to the city just two days ago, said: "I had just popped out to explore Oxford and have a coffee when I saw a number of people in black jackets with walkie-talkies.

"When I asked someone what was going on they told me that filming was taking place.

"I was then pointed to one of the locations of the sets. I haven’t seen any actors yet, or robots, but I am hopeful.”

Others on Twitter have been less excited by the drama, with some raising concerns about traffic and inconvenience for residents.

Turl Street, High Street and Catte Street will be affected by filming today with three-minute delays while the cast and crew film driving scenes.

Broad Street, Catte Street, Holywell Street, New College Lane and part of Parks Road will be closed on Sunday.

Crews will also be filming at Blenheim Palace.
