BALLOON sculptures will dance against the backdrop Oxford's dreaming spires as an artist bids to boost egg donations.

Stuart Semple, acclaimed for his high-profile public projects, will display static sculptural balloons in Radcliffe Camera and give out 175 smaller balloons as part of his Something Amazing exhibition.

The Bournemouth-based artist selected the city as one of six locations to stage the simultaneous spectacle tomorrow, to raise awareness of fertility clinics.

He also hopes the artistic stunt will help to inspire more women to help those struggling to have children by donating eggs.

He said: "I'm really excited to be creating these new pieces and to be bringing them to streets throughout England and Scotland. It's amazing to be able to lend my art to a cause as important as egg donation.

"I see art as a really generous thing and the idea that art can link so directly to life is wonderful."

Limited edition numbered artworks, created by Semple especially for the project, will be given away on the day.

He added: "Hopefully the project will be uplifting, bringing a little unexpected happiness to people's mornings.

"But importantly, I am also hoping of course that these temporary public sculptures, and the art pieces that we are giving away, will encourage some important discussions about egg donation and fertility."

The smaller balloons will be signed and bear a screen-printed portrait of a pregnant stomach, and passers-by will be encouraged to take them for free and pass them on, to represent the sacrifice of something valuable.

The project was commissioned by The Fertility Partnership to increase egg donations at their clinics and will also take place in London, Glasgow, Chelmsford, Southampton and Nottingham.

Mr Semple made headlines in 2009 for his Happy Cloud event, when he released thousands of smiley-faced clouds made from soap and helium from the Tate Modern.

Other stunts have included a 100 metre squared inflatable interactive sculpture titled 'Jump' in Melbourne’s Federation Square in 2013.

As well as 'My Happy Place' a city-wide event in association with Coventry Centre of Contemporary Art on the occasion of World Mental Health Day.
