SHOPPERS at a popular supermarket will have to get their groceries elsewhere as it closes for refurbishment.

Aldi, in Botley Road, west Oxford, which opened in 2009, will be closed from Monday, September 26 to Thursday, October 27.

A spokesman for the German-owned supermarket said the month-long closure would lead to a better store for shoppers.

He said: "We are upgrading our Botley Road store to improve our customers' shopping experience and expand our warehouse space.

"So we can work quickly and safely, we will be closing the shop.

"We look forward to opening again in late October and welcoming customers to our newly refurbished store."

Representatives for the store remained tight lipped about the details of the refurbishment.

But in May this year the supermarket was granted planning permission to build an additional mezzanine floor.

Oxford City Council approved the plans that would see the existing first floor warehouse be extended over the sales area to allow for a greater storage space.

This would increase the internal area from 360sqm to 641 sqm.

In a letter to the city council, the store said: "Aldi has been successful trading.

"In a competitive market place, Aldi must evolve to meet consumer demand.

"Following the extension of opening hours in 2014, Aldi does not have the required floorspace for the successful operation of the store to meet customer demand and therefore the first floor extension of the existing warehouse is required."

Currently there are five Aldi stores in Oxfordshire, including Botley Road.

In March the Oxford Mail announced that another store would be coming to Cowley, off Horspath Driftway, which will create up to 50 jobs.
