A HORSE has been killed after receiving a deep and untreatable from a discarded broken bottle on Port Meadow.
Posters from Oxford City Council have appeared across the site over the past few days.
It is understood that the tragic incident took place on Monday, August 15 while the horse was grazing unattended.
The posters state: "A horse has recently died as a result of an injury caused by discarded glass.
"We ask all users to please ensure all litter is responsibly disposed of, and if any glass is found on your walk please dispose of it.
"The animals play a vital part in the management of Port Meadow and are part of the landscape enjoyed by thousands of visitors."
Passerby Lorna Logan snapped photos this morning of "gross" piles of rubbish at the Wolvercote picnic area, with bags, glass, nappies and other items blowing out of the bins.
Angie Goff, who represents Wolvercote on Oxford City Council and is also head of the Wolvercote Commoners committee, said it was "very sad".
Since the incident was reported officers from the council's parks team have visited the site and collected seven bags of broken glass.
Ms Goff added: "It's terrible news and tragic for the horse and its owner.
"We have to educate people about the risks of leaving rubbish around for grazing animals."
