FIREFIGHTERS were called to a lorry that caught fire on Oxford's ring road last night.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said the call came in at about 8.30pm and when crews arrived at A34 South Hinksey slip road the vehicle was ablaze "throughout".

Hose reels from two fire engines were used by 10 firefighters to put out the flames, with the slip road reopened later that evening.

Crew manager Richard Allington, of Rewley Road Fire Station in Oxford, said: "Fortunately this lorry wasn’t carrying anything dangerous, but it does appear that an engine fault maybe to blame.

"We’d take this opportunity to remind drivers to make sure that their vehicles are safe and road worthy."

A fire service spokesman also urged people to be careful when travelling during warm weather.
