The dean of the Blavatnik School of Government has said the Brexit deal struck between the UK and EU will have profound impact on Oxfordshire.

Professor Ngaire Woods said: “There is serious uncertainty about the effects of Brexit on the manufacturing industry.

"For the 800,000 people or so working in the car industry in Britain, and those are good quality jobs, it’s not a question of upping your game, or working harder, or taking less pay.

"Your job is not a sure thing, as your company potentially faces a 10 per cent tariff when Britain exits from the European Union and might move countries as a result."

She predicts that the boards of big companies such as Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Vauxhall and BMW will start making decisions about where they are going to build the next car factories.

She added: "The companies are being courted by other European countries, who are longing to have those high-quality jobs in their economy.

"And the problem for Britain is we can’t tell these car companies what the arrangements are going to be for them, we don’t know that if in two years they will definitely face a 10 per cent tariff or not, or if they’ll be able to hire great talent from other European Union countries.”
