CURATORS at Modern Art Oxford have been looking back to the 1960s to celebrate the attraction's first 50 years.

As part of a programme of events to mark the Pembroke Street museum's first five decades, director Paul Hobson has posed to re-enact an early photo of the art gallery's first director Trevor Green, in 1966.

Staff at the museum discovered old photo of Mr Green in its archive and decided to re-create the scenario 50 years on.

Mr Hobson said: "It was as a young Oxford undergraduate in 1991 that I first encountered and fell in love with contemporary art at Modern Art Oxford.

"Standing here in the Upper Gallery, as I do most days, the recollection is as fresh as if it were yesterday.

"It is amazing to be at the helm of this powerhouse of art as we mark our 50th birthday, and to celebrate the impact my predecessors and their ideas have had on millions of visitors like me over the decades."

A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to create a commemorative publication documenting the gallery’s history.

About £17,500 is needed for an artist-led publication to mark the anniversary and contributions raised will go towards design, production and printing costs.

Dan Graham, Hans Haacke, Louise Lawler, Richard Long, Gustav Metzger and Yoko Ono are among those who have already agreed to contribute to the project.

The Pembroke Street gallery has launched its appeal through the Art Fund’s digital platform, Art Happen at artfund.org/mao-arthappens
