Thunder and downpours are set to make an unwelcome return to Oxfordshire today.

The Met Office has warned people to expect intense thundery downpours acros the south of England this morning, with further scattered thunderstorms breaking out this afternoon.

The heavy rain overnight has also caused flooding, with Thames Water tweeting to say it had recieved a "high volume" of calls overnight from customers.

3. A mother says she fears for her daughter's safety after a mix-up over school places

A mother fears for her daughter's safety after being told she must walk 45 minutes to school every day.

Bethany Hemblen, from Banbury, is furious after finding out 11-year-old Mia Armstrong will have to hike two miles across main roads on her own to get to class.

It comes after a mix-up over addresses meant Mia was allocated a place at a school more than two miles from her home.

In September she will start at Banbury Academy, despite her mum's request she be given a place across town at North Oxfordshire Academy.

4. A famous Tolkien map of Middle Earth will be going on display for one day only

For one day only a rare map of Middle-earth will be on display for Tolkien fans to enjoy at an Oxford Library.

The map on show today is annotated by author of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit JRR Tolkien and depicts the ideas behind the fantasy world he created for these novels.

It will be shown at the Bodleian's Weston Library from 9.30am to 5pm near the exhibition galleries.

Visitors will be able to view the rare piece of Tolkien ephemera which had been unseen for decades before it was recently found in October.

5. A postman has been praised after helping an elderly lady cross the road

Postman Justin Lovstrom went out of his way to help a woman pensioner cross the road and ended up getting praised on Facebook.

Mr Lovstrom, 47, from Abingdon, was doing his rounds in the town centre on Tuesday when he spotted the woman pensioner struggling to cross High Street near the Grapes pub.

A passing motorist took a photo and posted it on Facebook.

Mr Lovstrom, who has worked as a postman for the past 26 years, said he was surprised his simple act of kindness had got so much attention on social media.
