Five schoolchildren were playing in Cogges Park when a man removed a knife from his clothes and gestured for them to come towards him.

Two boys and three girls aged between nine and 11 were in the Church Lane park at about 6.45pm on Tuesday when they noticed a man nearby.

As they left the park the man approached them, removed a six to eight inch knife from his clothes and gestured with a knife for them to come towards him.

As the children ran away the man followed them.

He is described as white, about 5ft 10-11ins, in his late 20s to early 30s and bald.

He was wearing a black baseball cap, black leather jacket, black trousers and black shoes.

Investigating officer, PC Gary Smales of the reactive team based at Witney police station, said: “This was a terrifying experience for these boys and girls, and I understand the community will be worried about this incident.

"I can reassure residents that we are conducting a thorough investigation, including carrying our patrols in the area and obtaining CCTV, where possible.

“We also need the help of the public, so if you recognise the description of the offender, saw anything unusual in the area on Tuesday or have any other information please come forward. The easiest way to get in touch is by calling 101."
