THOUSANDS of Oxford United fans may have made it onto the pitch as the club sealed promotion but now many more have the chance to actually play on the Kassam Stadium turf.

The club is putting on a 'Celebration Sixes' tournament to mark the end of a fantastic season for the Yellows, and teams have until the end of the day tomorrow to sign up.

United legends will watch on as six-a-side teams of fans battle it out on the Kassam turf with a trophy – and the chance to be paraded in front of the home faithful next season – at stake on Thursday.

The teams will change in the Oxford United dressing room where the likes Kemar Roofe, Callum O'Dowda and Danny Hylton have all season and even have an official team photo taken.

The club's business development manager Peter Rhoades-Brown said: "It's a great opportunity for the fans to play on the promotion-winning pitch before it gets dug up for the summer.

"It will be a chance for them to score in the same goals that Roofey has all season and they will be able to walk down the tunnel."

The former Chelsea and Oxford United winger let slip that a few of the club's legends will be joining some of the teams already signed up and called on fans to rise to the challenge of playing against them.

He said: "Andy Whing will be playing so if you have ever wanted to play against him get involved.

"Wayne Brown will also be on one of the teams and we have got Jamie Brooks coming along as well."

The £500 per team entry price will go to the Oxford United Community Trust, which works on a number of projects in the local area.

The Trust, launched last year with the help of England manager Roy Hodgson, aims to improve the lives of people in Oxfordshire through sports coaching and participation, health and wellbeing, education, training and employment and social inclusion.

Mr Rhoades-Brown added: "The trust does amazing work in the community so it's all for a good cause as well.

"Even if fans can only muster a team of four or five we can sort something out and it should be a great day."

To register a team call Peter Rhoades-Brown or Adam Harris on 01865 337503 by 4pm on Wednesday.

Teams should arrive at the ground for 12.15pm on Thursday with games kicking off at 1pm. The final is at 5pm.
