Sewage flowed across Oxford's Folly Bridge this morning after a manhole cover came loose.

Traffic has been slow across the bridge all day after the leak early this morning.

Thames Water spokeswoman Becky Trotman said the spill was caused by fat blocking the sewers.

Engineers are currently at the bridge helping to clear away the sewage.

Oxford resident Simon Roth said he walked past the bridge, in Abingdon Road, at lunchtime where the sewage was "spraying out at very high pressure."

An employee at the Folly Bridge Restaurant said there had been a strong smell when the manhole came loose earlier on, and that water had been flowing down the street.
