Trade unionists, pensioners and activists were among around 50 people to take to the streets to mark the traditional May Day march in Oxford.

A number of campaign groups were lead through the city from Manzil Way to Broad Street by the Oxford Trades Union Congress with chants of "no ifs, no buts, no county council cuts".

The rally tradition marks a day in which unions come together to celebrate international workers day and support each others campaign efforts which this year centred around anti cuts and austerity.

Oxford and District trade union council president Pól Ó Cealleigh said: "The May Day march is an international workers day tradition and it shows support between all workers struggles including historical ones as well as the current ones like the junior doctors we have here.

"There is a whole load of things going on in Oxford, it is the most expensive per capita to live. The average wage may be higher than other areas but house prices are so exorbitant.

"So people live out in the countryside and then our transport budget gets cut so everyone has to use their cars for example - it is all cause and effect.

"It is just a vicious circle."
