THE boyfriend of a teenager who was killed when she ran into the path of an oncoming car has told of the moments before her death.

Katy Pancott, 19, from Kidlington, died of multiple injuries when she was hit on the A40 between Eynsham roundabout and Wolvercote roundabout in October.

She was being driven to Witney to see a friend by boyfriend Andi Rama in his Mercedes when the pair began arguing.

An inquest yesterday heard Miss Pancott, who was double the drink drive limit, tried to get out of the car while it was moving, causing Mr Rama to pull over into the entrance of the Agrivert plant.

She then ran into the main road and was hit by a Ford Focus driving at speeds of 50 to 60mph. She died hours later at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

Mr Rama told Oxford Coroner's Court the pair had been going through a "rough patch" in their relationship before her death.

He said: "We were always arguing, always splitting up. We were on and off - at the time it was difficult to say if we were on or off.

"As soon as I stopped the car she got out. I opened the window and shouted to her. It was pitch black.

"She was saying 'go ahead, leave me like you always do' and just swearing all the time.

"I said no I was waiting for her.

"I didn't see her run across the road. But she had stuff in her bag and I heard it shuffling around when she started running."

Then he said: "I just heard a bang."

At the family's request, forensic pathologist Nicholas Hunt told the inquest he was asked to check Miss Pancott's body for any signs of assault before she died, but he said although it did not look like it, the level of her injuries made it hard to tell.

Speaking after the inquest Miss Pancott's father David Griffin said while he now had more information about what happened in the moments up to his daughter's death he wasn't fully 'at rest'.

He added: "I have a bit more knowledge now. My knowledge of what occurred was almost non-existent before.

"Although I'm not fully at rest because unfortunately I don't believe everything that was said. But that's for me to live with for the rest of my life.

"I don't think a particularly nice picture of my daughter was painted."

A statement from Philip Cartwright, the driver of the Ford Focus that hit Miss Pancott, was read at the inquest.

Mr Cartwright, who was driving home to Witney with his wife Beryl, said all of a sudden he saw a face in front of him.

In a statement he said: "I didn't have time to swerve so I braked. I heard a bang and I let out a couple of screams, I had a hysterical reaction."

Coroner Darren Salter recorded a verdict of death by road traffic collision and said: "It must have been a massive shock when this occurred, and entirely unexpected.

"Katy being such a young age too, it's tragic. It's extremely sad."

Miss Pancott worked at Primark and studied travel and tourism at City of Oxford College. She lived at home in Orchard Way, Kidlington with her father Mr Griffin, brothers Lucas, 10, and Kyle, 13, and 17-year-old sister Sophia. Her mother Michelle Pancott lives in Oxford.

Mr Griffin added: "I'll never forget her. I never want to be in this position again.

"It's not just the loss of Katy, it's what she could have been. We have all missed out on her children and being a grandparent and all those wonderful things as you get older."
