A male driver left the scene of an accident in Littlemore this morning before paramedics could treat him for head injuries he suffered when the car he was in overturned.

The accident happened in Sandy Lane West, near the Eastern bypass, at 7.25am and the road was partly blocked by the incident.

Police officers are now trying to find the driver to check on his welfare.

South Central Ambulance spokesman David Gallagher said: "We were called at 07.28 to reports of a single car accident outside St John Fisher School in Sandy Lane West.

"The male driver had got himself out of the vehicle.

"We sent an ambulance to the scene but on arrival the patient had absconded from the scene.

"Bystanders reported he had a head injury but as he wasn’t there when we arrived, this can’t be confirmed by the ambulance crew that attended.

They waited at the scene for a short while to see if Thames Valley Police could locate the patient nearby but when they could not, they left the scene."

Thames Valley Police spokeswoman Connie Primmer said: "Officers were called to Sandy Lane West after the car overturned.

"The driver was injured, although it does not appear that his injuries were serious.

The driver of the vehicle appears to have left the scene before police arrived and officers are making enquiries to locate him.

"The vehicle has been recovered and the road is clear.

The priority at this time is to locate the driver and check on his welfare.

"The circumstances of the collision are being investigated."
