EIGHT men have been arrested following last night's match between Oxford United and Millwall and police said many more could follow in the coming weeks.

Police said that after several incidents of 'serious violence' a post-match investigation had been launched and that a large number of arrest could be made.

Eight men, believed to be both Millwall and Oxford United fans were arrested last night.

Among them was a 56-year-old man from Oxford arrested on suspicion of affray and a 20-year-old from Wantage on suspision of possessing an offensive weapon, both released on bail.

A 19-year-old from Oxford was also arrested on suspicion of affray and remains in police custody.

Oxford Police Commander Supt Christian Bunt slammed the troublemakers and warned that more fans could be getting a knock at the door.

He said: “Unfortunately we had a sizeable number of people who associate themselves with Millwall and Oxford Football Clubs who had clearly come to the game to only cause trouble.

“We were forced to deal with a number of disorderly incidents which included serious violence.

"This kind of behaviour is not acceptable and will be dealt with robustly.

"I have instigated a post match investigation and I expect a large number of arrests to be made in the coming weeks."

Thames Valley Police also said that its horses were attacked both before and after the game.

A horse named Odin received a cut on his leg from a bottle, while Mallory took a bottle over the head.

Sgt Spencer Kervin, head of Thames Valley Police Mounted section said: “I am very disappointed in the behaviour towards the horses, of the minority who call themselves fans.

"Officers on the horses have a job to do, and I don’t expect to come under attack from bottles and stones as a result of them trying to keep the peace."
