A CONSERVATIVE councillor in Kidlington has apologised after a leaflet produced by his party claimed rival councillors did not support parking restrictions in the village.

The leaflet, produced in autumn last year, said when Kidlington Parish Council was under the control of Liberal Democrats, the local authority rejected proposals to add double yellow lines and waiting zones.

It follows the implementation of the parking restrictions in August last year, which included yellow lines on the west of Oxford Road and junctions of Maple Avenue, Hazel Walk and The Broadway.

But parish council chairman Maurice Billington has apologised for the leaflet and said the previous council, in power until May last year, was actually in favour of the restrictions.

The council is now jointly led by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.

Mr Billington said: “I wish to correct this statement, the council under the control of the Liberal Democrats did in fact support this scheme.

“I wish to apologise unreservedly for this incorrect information.”

He added the message was referring to the views of some individual Liberal Democrat councillors, and not the parish council as a whole.

Residents had previously complained to the county council that commuters were abusing the roads outside their homes as a free “park-and-ride”.
