AN IRISH folk band were so inspired by Oxford United’s FA Cup heroics they have written a song about Sunday’s giant-killing.

The Corrigan Brothers, from Limerick, were taking a break from recording an album when they became glued to the TV as the U’s beat Premier League Swansea City 3-2 at the Kassam Stadium.

The band’s hit There’s No-one as Irish as Barack Obama became a YouTube sensation in 2008 and the trio have now turned their attention to Oxford United’s famous victory.

The song will be released on Saturday and will be free to download as a gift to fans.

Singer and songwriter Ger Corrigan said: “We put the TV on and we couldn’t stop watching. We were amazed by Oxford’s performance.

“They played so well and just went for it. It wasn’t a smash and grab job, they completely outplayed Swansea. As soon as it finished we said ‘let’s write and record a song to help celebrate it’.”

The song is a rewrite of their most famous hit which they performed at Mr Obama’s official inauguration party at the president’s request.

It has previously been re-jigged to feature Cardiff City’s controversial owner Vincent Tan, singer Susan Boyle and most recently Democratic presidential candidate Martin O’Malley.

The lyrics have been changed once again and the title renamed Over the Moon for Oxford United.

Mr Corrigan said: “We only do it when we are inspired by something, as we were on Sunday. We wanted to make the song timeless, so we didn’t mention any players – they come and go – but wanted to make the lyrics about the day. From the TV you could tell the atmosphere was amazing – the crowd were sucking the ball into the net.”

Mr Corrigan, whose brother Eoin lived in Oxford for eight years, said the band – as well as Ireland as a nation – had strong links to the city and the club.

He said: “I used to spend a lot of time in Oxford and I loved it. I would often spend time walking around the city and there’s an emotional connection for me there too.

He added: “Also there’s a strong Irish connection at Oxford United and to see both Callum O’Dowda and Pat Hoban coming on against Swansea was fantastic.

“Going further back, two of Ireland’s greatest football heroes, Ray Houghton and John Aldridge, were Oxford players.”

The band, which also features Brian and Donncha Corrigan, hope to make it to Oxford’s fourth-round tie against Newport or Blackburn and even plan to play in Oxford city centre before the cup final in May if the team make it that far.

Mr Corrigan said: “Hopefully the tune will be sung out across the terraces as Oxford keep their cup run going.”

Lyrics to Over the Moon for Oxford United

Oxford United lived the FA Cup dream
The Premier League boys came from Swansea
And were defeated
By two goals to three

Toor a look toor a loo toor a loo we’re delighted
We’re over the moon for Oxford United

Oh what a game
Oh what a show
The Oxford boys just gave it a go
All of the players, every man
Performed such heroics at the Kassam

Toor a look toor a loo toor a loo we’re delighted
We’re over the moon for Oxford United

So bring on the next round, another day
Another step towards Wembley Way
Momentum is building, they’re not gonna lose
It’s the FA Cup this year for the U’s

Toor a look toor a loo toor a loo we’re delighted
We’re over the moon for Oxford United.
