SILENCE descended on the town hall yesterday as people gathered to remember those who died in the Paris attacks.

Oxford City Council workers joined with people across Europe to commemorate the victims of Friday night’s atrocities.

City council leader Bob Price, who officiated, said: “People were expressing their sympathy and their solidarity for the victims, their families and those who have suffered trauma.

“I think there will be a tremendous display of national unity in the future and solidarity with the French people will continue.”

The city flag is now at half-mast over the town hall and will remain so until tomorrow in solidarity with the three days of official mourning in France.

A candlelit vigil will be held at Carfax in Oxford today from 5pm to 6pm.

Councillor Jim King, the mayor of Witney, sent his condolences to Le Touquet, Witney’s French twin town, about 120 miles from Paris.

He wrote: “The strength of the ties between our towns reflects our enduring friendship and our shared values of community, freedom and tolerance.”
