A POT of £110,000 spare city cycling cash should be spent on a number of ‘lower cost’ schemes as larger projects are off the table.

The unallocated money could go towards encouraging cyclists from Oxford Business Park, Vue Cinema and Oxford Academy to use a recognised route.

The Cycling Review Group – set up by Oxford City Council – recommended last month that lower-cost schemes such as signing the route between Littlemore and the Leys Pool should be prioritised.

The city executive board agreed that Oxfordshire County Council may not approve larger projects.

City council board member Alex Hollingsworth said: “The county council has been clear that it is unwilling to progress schemes in areas where it is planning or already carrying out consultation on larger projects – for example in the Headington area.

“The sums of money set aside by the city council for capital schemes can and should be progressed as soon as possible. That means selecting schemes that do not require any input or permission from the county council.”

The executive agreed to target ‘lower cost’ projects but said further assessment was needed to determine where the money would go.

All on-street cycling schemes, such as improvements to roads and cycle paths are the responsibility of the county.

The city council can undertake projects such as signs, cycle parking at park and rides and towpath upgrades.
