FRUSTRATED residents in Blackbird Leys have called on Oxford City Council to remove two parked cars being used as dumps.

The vehicles, a red Citroen ZX and burgundy Nissan Primera, are in a car park to the rear of Windrush Tower in Knights Road.

According to locals they have been abandoned in the car park for at least a year.

One is visibly full of discarded items including computer parts, DVDs, tools and a camera tripod, and the other is packed with cardboard boxes.

Windrush tower resident Richard Herbert said: “They have been there for God knows how long.

“If there was more lighting in the car park people would use it properly.

“I sometimes park my car here for work but I don’t feel safe.

“The vehicles have not moved since their arrival in the car park. One has a foreign number plate.”

Justin White, whose partner Tanya lives in Windrush Tower, added: “We think the car park is meant for tower residents but we get problems all the time.

“Everyone uses the car park as storage space – that’s what we’ve noticed. The cars are used as sheds.”

Kestrel Crescent resident Liz Helliwell, who often cuts through the car park on her way to the shops, said she thought the cars had been there about two years.

She said: “I have spoken to the city council about it at the Leys Community Partnership, and to PCSOs.

“In the burgundy one I can see a child’s pushchair, a tennis racquet, computer parts, car parts, clothes, children’s toys and an oil can.

“First of all it’s an eyesore. It doesn’t look nice and people in the homes around here have to put up with it.

“Also, it encourages other people to do the same.

“I would like to see them taken away – what’s in there can’t be any good or it wouldn’t have been left.

“They should be treated as abandoned cars and crushed.”

Mrs Helliwell added that the burgundy car was not displaying a tax disc, while the red one – which has a foreign numberplate – contained an insurance document expiring in 2016.

Graham Bourton, head of direct services at the council, said: “We have not received any reports of abandoned vehicles at Windrush Tower.

“However, we aim to keep the number of abandoned vehicles on our streets to a minimum and welcome co-operation from the public to help us do this.

“Abandoned vehicles can be an eyesore and a risk to public health when vandalised.

“You can report an abandoned vehicle on our website or call 01865 249811.”
