TRAFFIC delays and congestion continued on major routes into and out of Oxford yesterday.
Journeys were heavily delayed as cars queued up around the city for hours.
The £10m roadworks to revamp the Wolvercote and Cutteslowe roundabouts meant cars built up on the A40 in both directions, as well as up the A44 and A34.
Botley Road and Park End Street also featured long queues due to the work to transform Frideswide Square.
Some drivers accessed the city via the Swinford toll bridge in Eynsham.
Oxfordshire County Council cabinet member for transport David Nimmo-Smith urged people to plan their journeys to minimise the effect of the roadworks.
He added: “These are serious roadworks and they have to be done.”
Work on the £5.3m development of Frideswide Square is expected to last until December, with the roadworks in North Oxford planned to last 16 months.
Drivers have been warned of potential disruption when parts of the A34 are closed overnight for works. The southbound carriageway between Abingdon and Milton will close from 10pm tonight until 6am tomorrow for resurfacing and vegetation clearance. It could close the following night as well if the work takes longer to complete than planned.
The northbound carriageway between Chilton and Milton will be closed by Highways England at the same time today and tomorrow.
