NEVER work with children and animals, as the saying goes.

But actor Joshua Jenkins, 27, is happy teaming up with white rat Toby, his co-star in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time.

The play, at the New Theatre in George Street, is based on Oxford author Mark Haddon’s novel of the same name.

So far the drama, adapted by Simon Stephens, has won seven Olivier Awards and five Tonys.

It follows the story of 15-year-old Christopher, who has autism, and is trying to work out the mystery of who killed a dog.

His detective work takes him on a journey that turns his world upside down.

Joshua, who plays Chris, said: “It’s exciting coming to Oxford as it’s where Mark Haddon lives, and he is coming to see the show, so it’s a bit special.

“It’s a beautiful story and the tour is fantastic as it has all the production values of a West End show.”

Mr Haddon said Mr Jenkins was a “very good actor”.

He added: “We’ve had many Christophers by now and they have all been fantastic.

“But one of the many wonderful things about the stage production is how much of an ensemble piece it is.”

Performances run until Saturday.
