Firefighters have praised the actions of a young boy who alerted his family to a chip pan fire in their flat.

They were called to a property in Alex Smith Square at 4.40pm on Saturday to reports of a kitchen fire.

Slade Park fire station crew manager Kevin Morgan said: “Due to the prompt action taken by the occupiers' young son when he heard the smoke alarm sounding, the fire service was swiftly notified and on scene within minutes of the call. This meant we were able to quickly extinguish the fire and prevent further damage to the property from both fire and smoke.”

The two adult occupants were treated for the effects of smoke inhalation and taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital.
