A THOUSAND students, artists and art enthusiasts visited Oxford Brookes University to see the work of fine art students.

Some 33 final-year students exhibited projects which have taken years to produce at the university’s Headington campus.

They varied from video pieces to sculptures and audio experiences.

Cowley resident Susannah Canning treated visitors to a walk around the grounds of Blenheim Palace in Woodstock with her “audio walk” piece.

Between September last year and January, the 21-year-old regularly visited Blenheim to record the sounds of the park.

The Winchester-born student said: “Blenheim is obviously this incredibly beautiful place and some of the audio is the quiet of the park, but being a massive tourist attraction you can also hear tourists exploring the grounds speaking Italian and Mandarin. The exhibition has been great as we’ve had people from across the city coming and viewing the artwork.

“It’s also great to see the finished work of my fellow students. You spend years in the workshop watching people work, and now we finally get to see the finished product.”

After Miss Canning finishes her degree she will become an assistant curator at the university.

But not everyone who exhibited at the show, which finished on Friday, is dreaming of a long career in fine arts. Retired primary school teacher Jean Wykes decided to do a fine arts degree part-time five years ago.

She also exhibited her structure piece called The Adventure of a Straight Line and said: “The diversity of mediums everyone has used is amazing. There’s an incredible amount to explore.”
