THIS volunteer got the opportunity to try out a very unusual hat at an Oxford University museum craft day.

Staff at the Pitt Rivers Museum, in South Parks Road, staged an event on Tuesday (May12) to celebrate traditional craft techniques.

During the event, volunteer Tsvetomira Dumbalska dressed in a porcupine fish skin helmet from the Republic of Kiribati, in the Pacific.

She said: “There are so many fascinating objects in the Pitt Rivers Museum and the craft day was an exciting opportunity for visitors to touch and handle some of them, at the same time as learning about the people behind them.”

The Pitt Rivers, home to about 500,000 ancient anthropological curiosities, started off with an original donation in 1884 by Army officer and archaeologist Lieutenant General Augustus Pitt Rivers.

He passed over an initial 22,000 items on the condition that the University of Oxford would employ a permanent anthropology lecturer, as well as ensure the exhibits were housed in a dedicated building.
