A KEBAB van manager has vowed to do all he can to get his street trading licence back after Oxford City Council refused to renew it.

The council’s decision came as Harry’s Grill – which traded outside the Oxford Castle Quarter in New Road – was given a zero food hygiene rating in March after several health and safety breaches going back several years.

Last month’s inspection found there was no hot water, hand wash soap or washing equipment and that food was not kept at the right temperature.

The business agreed to close down until food safety was improved.

Owner Haroon Khan and manager Liaqat Hussain then attempted to renew their street trading licence which ran out at the end of last month.

But Oxford City Council’s Licensing and Registration Sub Committee found the application invalid – missing several documents – but added that even if the right documents were submitted it would have been refused.

Harry’s Grill manager Mr Hussain said: “Obviously we are not happy with the decision, but we understand it and are trying to do our best to get our licence back.

“I just want to be given one more chance – since the inspection we have done everything we have been asked to do. We will do everything we can.”

Mr Hussain said he and Mr Khan would re-train staff and consider a new application.

In Monday’s meeting, concerns were raised that raw chicken was kept near to bread, as well as the fact that the van’s problems had been largely unaddressed for so long.
