DRIVERS and passengers faced more traffic chaos as roadworks caused queues of nearly two miles.

Traffic on the Botley Road queued from the Botley Interchange to the Ashmolean Museum, 1.6 miles away.

The queues are the result of roadworks on the A420, which began last week and have caused rush-hour problems.

Oxfordshire County Council closed the road westbound between the A34 and Cumnor to complete emergency repairs on the road after stretches began subsiding by about 10cm.

Vincent and Siobhan Boyle were queueing for 40 minutes and missed an appointment for their new litter of six puppies at a vet in Botley Road.

Mrs Boyle, from Sandford-on-Thames, said: “It’s at the point where it’s absolutely at a standstill.”

Stagecoach was reporting delays of between 11 and 50 minutes on its services running through Botley Road and Oxford Bus Company said all its City services were experiencing delays of up to 30 minutes.

Some buses servicing Oxford Railway Station were forced to terminate at Gloucester Green due to the heavy traffic.

The roadworks are expected to last for eight weeks in total.
