VISITORS flocked to see a life-sized model of the rocket-powered car aiming to break the World Land Speed Record by travelling at more than 1,000mph – faster than the speed of sound.

Yesterday, members of the public gathered in Keble Road to see a replica of the Bloodhound Supersonic Car, which has been built by British engineers to break the current land speed record of 763mph.

Oxford University graduate and RAF Wing Commander Andrew Green will drive the car in the Hakskeen Pan of South Africa in September as the team bid to smash the current record he made in the car ThrustSSC.

Wing Commander Green is based at the Royal Air Force Headquarters, in High Wycombe, and has served in the RAF since he was sponsored to attend Oxford University to study mathematics.

Wing Commander Green graduated in 1983.
