POLICE were last night still trying to identify a person reportedly killed by a train near Oxford yesterday morning.

Emergency services were called at 6.30am to reports a person had been hit between Banbury and Oxford.

The body was found at Yarnton level crossing, south of Kidlington, not at Sandy Lane crossing as first reported.

First Great Western (FGW) said the first train service affected was the 6.07am Banbury to London Paddington which stopped in the area.

The line was closed shortly afterwards, all train services cancelled and replacement buses laid on.

A FGW spokesman said at about 8am it was unclear what had happened.

He said: “The accident was reported at 6.30am.

“The report was of a body near the train line – not of a person being hit by a train but that’s not to say it wasn’t.”

British Transport Police said last night it was unable to release any details about the person who had died until family had been informed.

It was not clear last night whether the person was hit by the train or just found dead on the line.
