CAN'T afford to splash out on a new winter wardrobe? Refresh your look with this season's new beauty trends, straight from the international autumn/winter catwalks.

From high knots at Louis Vuitton to 80s frosted blue eyes at Issa, throw beauty caution to the wind and experiment with new hair and make-up concepts for some instant cool. KALEIDOSCOPE COLOUR

AS SEEN AT: Marc Jacobs, Issa and Sonia Rykiel.

Shoulder pads are back in fashion and the 80s-inspired look has made it into our make-up bags too.

Think playful flashes of colour like cobalt blue, deep green, bright purple or fuchsia on eyes teamed with equally bright glossy lips.

"There is a wide variety of colour - it's whatever looks good on the girl," says Francois Nars, founder and creative director of NARS Cosmetics who was behind the Marc Jacobs show which showcased 65 different make-up looks.

Porcelain skin was key on many of the models to allow the bright colours to pop. HAIR HEIGHTS

AS SEEN AT: Louis Vuitton, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Elie Saab.

Lacking in the height department? Forget the heels, the hippest new way to tower over everybody is with your hair. Locks were piled high on top of models' heads with some serious backcombing and outrageous shapes including oversized twists, exaggerated Elvis quiffs and piled-high top knots.

Don't be afraid to hold back on the hairspray -use a strong-hold spritz after back-brushing each section to give your style staying power. TWILIGHT EYES

AS SEEN AT: Versace, Loewe, and Anna Sui.

Put a twinkle in your eye with this season's smokey metallics.

The classic rock chick eye has been given a sparkling winter makeover, as championed by Pat McGrath, Max Factor's global creative design director.

High-lights of shine are applied to various areas of the eyes to create different flattering effects, Pat explains.

"Looks such as twilight eyes' are really dramatic when set against a sheer flawless background," she says. UNDONE TRESSES

AS SEEN AT: Giles, Prada and Christopher Kane.

Lived-in texture was a key look for hair on the catwalks whether it was down and loose or up in a bun, braid or ponytail.

Undone tresses should look "slightly distorted and grunge-led," according to Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck, Toni & Guy global creative director.

"Prep the hair with volume mousse and sea salt spray and then scrunch with the hands to give a really raw and workable texture," Sacha recommends.

If you are going for an up-do, pin hair up loosely, pull sections of hair loose and rub between your fingertips for a mussed-up look. PRECISION LIPS

AS SEEN AT: Antonio Berardi, Elie Saab and J.Mendel.

Prep that pout - this season lips are taking centre stage. Look-at-me lips in bright electric red or creamy claret ruled the catwalks. To achieve the must-have uber precise finish use a lip liner for definition.

"Fill with a lipstick in the same shade, blot for staying power and re-apply and blot a second time for an intense matte effect.

International make-up artist Bobbi Brown, who created the red lip look at J.Mendel, says: "Don't feel constrained to wear red found in a lipstick tube.

"Create your own customised lipstick by combining a red you like with a favourite neutral or brown lipstick.

"A red lip stain is another easy way to wear red." Tried & Tested

By Jackie Caffrey KERATIN COMPLEX SMOOTHING THERAPY

THIS summer has been a washout and there's the added downside that rain plays havoc with hair.

The ghd is a must for all us girlies wanting sleek, straight hair. But mine is curly and coarse and I struggle to get the finished look. I have had chemically straightened treatments in the past, but not everyone can use this.

There is a new kid on the block - Keratin Complex, a system which leaves your hair smoother, shinier and more manageable. It can be used on any type of hair and is even safe to be used on children.

Ab Fab Hair and Beauty, in Newton Mearns, offer the latest technology which guarantees to eliminate up to 95% of frizz from the hair, leaving it shiny and smooth - and easy to manage.

It infuses Keratin deep into the cuticle and seals and repairs each one. The hair does not react to moisture, eliminating frizz and curl whatever the weather. Andrea, my stylist, washed my hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove all traces of any product.

The Keratin Complex is left in the hair for up to 30 minutes before it is blast-dried straight. Each section of hair is straightened no less than seven times, at a high temperature.

The hair should then be washed three days later with the shampoo and conditioner provided as part of the treatment, and the effect lasts for around four months. At my first wash I just blasted my hair with the hairdryer and the results were great - my hair was smooth and shiny, and I didn't need my ghds.

The treatment costs from £150 for short hair up to £200 for long hair. To celebrate the launch, Ab Fab is offering 25% discount for a limited period. Call 0141 616 4000 to book an appointment. Buy it quick
