A MAN has been jailed for life for the murder of a Paisley teenager in a drive-by shooting.

Anthony Collins, part of a gang which blasted 19-year-old Andrew Devlin to death outside a nightspot in the town in August 2007, was ordered to serve at least 20 years.

Appearing for sentence, Collins, 30, had also been convicted of attempting to murder 28-year-old Gerald O'Doherty, the intended target of the shooting.

At the High Court in Glasgow, judge Lord Malcolm told Collins: "The jury has accepted that you were the lookout and not the gunman.

"You participated in the deliberate discharges of a shotgun in a public place where the public was, resulting in the tragic loss of Andrew Devlin.

"He was minding his own business, having a night out with friends this is exactly what can happen when a shotgun is fired towards people."

The trial heard that Andrew and friends were outside the town's Suzy Q's snooker hall when a Peugeot drove up and shots were fired.

Within seconds Andrew was dying of pellet wounds to his back and Mr O'Doherty was gravely injured.

Yesterday Andrew's dad William, 40, said of the sentence: "It was all we could have hoped for now we can try and get on with our lives."

Mr O'Doherty recovered after spending 11 months in hospital.

Collins former co-accused 28-year-old John Burke, who was acquitted of murder and attempted murder, earlier pleaded guilty to firearms charges and was jailed for eight years.
