EVENING TIMES readers have helped to boost the Beatson Pebble Appeal by a magnificent £250,000.

Since we backed the campaign, which aims to build a new state-of-the-art cancer research centre in Glasgow, around a quarter-of-a-million pounds have flooded in.

Recent successes have included the Munro Challenge and the Zip Slide across the Clyde, which each raised £32,000.

Lindsey McArthur, the appeal's development manager, said: "We're very grateful for the support shown by readers of the Evening Times.

"To have reached the quarter-of-a-million mark is fantastic, and it brings our overall total to just under £5m - half-way to our £10m target.

"There is still a long way to go so we would urge everyone to keep on supporting the Beatson Pebble Appeal - every single donation, large or small, makes a difference."

Mind-reader Paul Hamilton has raised almost £1000 for the appeal.

His spectacular feats of illusion enchanted an audience of around 70 people at Tiger Tiger recently.

"It was a great night - the audience really seemed to enjoy it, and we have hopefully raised awareness of the appeal into the bargain," said Paul.

So just how far will YOU go for the Beatson Pebble Appeal?

All the way to Vietnam or China? From Rowardennan to Balmaha? Or is a quick swoosh down the Falkirk Wheel more your style?

There are lots of ways to get involved in the coming months. First up is the Ribbon Ramble, on October 4, a sponsored eight-mile walk along a stretch of the West Highland Way from Rowardennan to Balmaha.

Organised by Think Pink, it has raised around £20,000 in the past, and organisers are hoping for a great turnout.

There's also an abseil from the Falkirk Wheel happening on October 24, and, if you're feeling a little more adventurous, you can sign up for one of the challenge events taking place next year.

Treks are planned for Vietnam in February 2010, the Great Wall of China in April 2010 and Mount Kilimanjaro in November 2010.
