PARTICK THISTLE legend Alan Hansen has paid tribute to club captain Alan Archibald in his testimonial year.

The former Thistle, Liverpool and Scotland defender has helped support Archie's testimonial.

He took a wage cut when he left Dundee United in January, 2007, to return to Thistle, his first club.

Hansen said: "I only played for two senior clubs during my 18-year career - Partick Thistle and Liverpool.

"I know how much your loyalty can be tested at times.

"However, Alan deserves tremendous credit as he has come back to Thistle after playing in the higher league with United.

"I can't recall hearing about anyone else who has dropped down a league to play for his former club and try and get them back up to the top flight.

"That says a lot about Alan Archibald and I hope his testimonial year will be a big success."

A knee injury ended Hansen's career in 1990 after he had skippered Liverpool to the league championship in 1989 aged 34.

Hansen has urged Archibald to keep playing. He said: "I had no option but to call time on my career because of injury, but if you are fit you must keep on playing as long as you can.

"I haven't seen Alan play this season but from having spoken to Dennis McQuade, I know he is in outstanding condition and exceptionally professional in his approach.

"Alan is only 31, and for me he should have a good few years left.

"On top of that, when you are a centre-back it is easier to play on."

Meanwhile at Archie's testimonial golf day at Pollock Golf Club, a round of golf with Hansen and fellow former Jag legend Dennis McQuade at Hansen's home course of Hillside by Southport was auctioned for £700.
