A PLAN has been submitted for a works compound for the major scheme to revamp Oxford’s Frideswide Square.

Oxfordshire County Council has applied to use land also used as a temporary car park in Osney Lane for two years. The area will include seven portable buildings for uses such as offices and toilets until January next year and for storage of materials.

The £5.8m scheme is aimed at enabling a better flow of traffic in the square, by Oxford railway station. It includes three roundabouts with traffic heading along a central boulevard.

There will be one large roundabout outside the station with two miniroundabouts outside the Royal Oxford Hotel.

Work to prepare the square will begin on Monday and the main work will begin on March 2. The project is expected to take up to 10 months to complete. Vehicles will use the site from 7.30am to 5.30pm, the application said.

The application said: “To assist in the construction of the scheme, an area of land off the adjacent street off Osney Lane has been identified as a preferred location for use as a site compound facility which is to include offices, welfare facilities and materials storage.

“The land is currently being used as a temporary car park and an area of approximately 2,500m2 has been identified for our use. Access to and from the site will be via the existing access off Osney Lane.”
